Advance announcement

Kenny Werner and James Carter at Dominion Chalmers United Church
19 November 2006, 8:00 pm
Tickets: $37 or $42

The Ottawa Jazz Festival is very happy to announce that Kenny Werner and James Carter will kick off the 2006/2007 Winter Concert Series with a performance on November 19th at the Dominion-Chalmers United Church, 255 Cooper Street, 8:00 pm. This will be a spectacular evening featuring two great artists coming together in a one-time-only combination of exquisite talent and instinct.

Kenny Werner’s has been a long and distinguished career, both as a jazz pianist and composer. After graduating from high school he earned a Concert Piano Major from the

Manhattan
School of Music. He later studied jazz at the Berklee School of Music, where he began to find his creative direction. He emerged as an excellent performer, composer and session player, and has since performed and recorded with a hit-list of ‘who’s who’ on the jazz scene including Charles Mingus, Ron Carter, Joe Lovano, Sonny Fortune, Lee Konitz, Bobby McFerrin, Joe Henderson, Dave Holland, John Scofield, Charlie Haden, and Dizzy Gillespie, to name just a few. He has also led numerous groups, including his own trio with bassist Ratzo Harris and drummer Tom Rainey that lasted for 14 years, acknowledged by some critics as one of the most daring and innovative trios to ever play together.

 “One of
New York’s best-kept piano secrets is Kenny Werner, a true innovator with a delicate touch and a vivid imagination …”  Jazziz

James Carter was born into a musical family in
Detroit where he was constantly exposed to music. From an early age James was recognized for his immense natural talent as a player, and at only 21 years of age was invited to debut in New York City by Lester Bowie and his Ensemble. After moving to New York James quickly began to make a name for himself. Throughout the 1990’s he gained notoriety for his diverse style and ability as a player, and has received critical acclaim for his various releases on Atlantic and Columbia/SONY up to the present day. He has performed with such esteemed musicians as Herbie Hancock, Rodney Whitaker, Regina Carter, Cyrus Chestnut and many more. Five times he has been awarded the Baritone Saxophone Player of the Year Award by DownBeat magazine, and in 2006 JJA Jazz Awards named him Baritone Saxophonist of the Year. On 15 February 2004, James Carter received one of America’s highest cultural awards, The Dr. Alaine Locke award, bestowed upon individuals who have provided exemplary service and leadership in the promotion of African American culture.

Tickets are $37 General Admission, $42 Reserved Seating, and can be purchased at Compact Music, CD Warehouse, and Ticketmaster, or directly through the Ottawa Jazz Festival box office by calling 613-241-2633, by visiting 61A York Street in the Byward Market (Mon-Fri, 9 am to 4:30 pm), or online at www.ottawajazzfestival.com. The Fourth Stage of the National Arts Centre
$20

CD: This Uneven Pace

Join Ottawa's Megan Jerome Trio for an enchanting evening of avant-folk and plucky boho-jazz as they release their newest disc, This Uneven Pace. A follow-up to the independent release Unlonely (2004), the new disc features twelve beguiling homemade songs... intimate, quirky and fearlessly beautiful miniatures.

The Megan Jerome Trio is Megan Jerome (piano, voice), Petr Cancura (saxophones, mandolin, melodica, accordion, voice) and Mike Essoudry (drumset, percussion, voice). The trio returns to Ottawa after a whirlwind Canadian tour that brought them rave reviews and placed This Uneven Pace at the top of the charts of community radio stations across the country. Smart and edgy, the trio has a subtle, clear and bouncy delivery. Performances bubble over with interesting melodies and accents, spotlighting Jerome's
intriguing, occasionally saucy, voice.

Sophie has reached #15 on the U.S. Billboard Jazz album chart according to Neilson-Soundscan and is in good company in the Canadian charts, being in the top 5 best sellers alongside Diana Krall, Michael Buble and Madeline Peroulx.

Ottawa JazzWorks updates and connections

With the increasing number of JazzWorks allumni (faculty and students) subscribed to this newsletter and living far from Ottawa, this section is intended to provide an opportunity for them to stay in touch and announce activities that may be of interest to other JazzWorks participants or the general public. All of the caveats, warnings, rules and stuff at the end of the newsletter regarding announcements still apply.

Ottawa JazzWorks is an annual 3-day weekend of 24-hour, wall-to-wall jazz experimentation for adult jazz musicians (all levels, beginner through professional) and advanced high school musicians, with a faculty of pre-eminent Canadian and American jazz musicians and educators.

For the first time JazzWorks 2006 was held at CAMMAC at McDonald Lake North of Hawksbury. This wonderful new facility is especially designed to accommodate groups for musical instruction in a natural setting. Check out the JazzWorks web site for more details.

To have your jazz happenings posted in this newsletter send an email to
ottawajazzhappenings@jazzworkscanada.com with the relevant details, including the contact for further information. Only email notices will be accepted. Please no attachments. A plain email with the relevant details, preferably in plain text format, is all that is needed.

Events must be jazz related or otherwise worthy of notice in my sole opinion.

In general I will only send one message per week to the list. I try to send the message early in the week - but it will vary according to my schedule and workload.

Normally events will only be announced that are occurring in the week to 10 days after the newsletter date in order to keep the newsletter from getting too long.

If you want to announce a jazz event you should send me an email about it as early as possible and no later than the weekend before it needs to appear in the newsletter.

I reserve the right to edit submissions - including not putting them on the posting at all.
